What is a Registered Massage Therapist?
Massage therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario
and as such, massage therapy should be performed by a
Registered Massage Therapist (RMT).
A Registered Massage Therapist is an
individual who has:
-
Completed
competency-based education at educational institutions
recognized by the Government of Ontario;
-
Studied
anatomy, physiology, pathology, physical assessment,
neurology, treatments, ethics and other subjects;
-
Completed
a minimum of 150 clinical hours;
-
Successfully
completed examinations from and have been registered
by
the College
of Massage Therapists of Ontario (the College) in
accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act
and the Massage Therapy Act;
-
Maintained
their registration by participating in continuing education
and a Quality Assurance Program that assists them in
the maintenance of high professional standards and quality
care of their clients.
Only members
of the College are permitted to use the title Massage
Therapist or Registered Massage Therapist or the designation
of RMT or MT. All members of the Ontario Massage Therapist
Association must be registered with the College and are
therefore licensed massage therapy practitioners.
At Dr. Stana Djurdjevic & Associates,
our Registered Massage Therapists implement a variety
of massage techniques including:
Swedish Massage
This traditional form of massage is used to treat everything
from headaches and stress to sports injuries and fibromyalgia,
along with everything in between.
Prenatal and Postnatal Massage
Specialized pillows and massage techniques help moms-to-be
deal with the rapid physical changes of pregnancy. We
can also help after the baby is born with a baby massage
session that teaches parents the intricacies of working
with their newest addition.
Lymphatic Massage
Developed in the 1930s, lymphatic drainage is a delicate
form of massage that stimulates the body's lymphatic system,
improving the metabolism, helping the body to eliminate
waste and toxins and providing a boost to the immune system.
Sports Massage
The sports massage therapist may also make more use for
frictioning techniques which involves applying deep pressure
to tissues repeatedly to break down adhesions (sticky
bits on tendons) and soften scar tissue. Some sports massage
techniques are designed to regress an injury back to the
acute stage, in order to then trigger the body's natural
healing response.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that
focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective
tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense
and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness,
and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used
as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower
and the pressure is deeper.
In addition to many other techniques, speak to your therapist
at Dr. Stana Djurdjevic & Associates at 905-890-7175
and they will provide you with more information.
